notes:Carolyn A. • In my case, I have found that charging by the hour is best, as my editing time varies generally between 5 and 10 pages per hour. Of course, the client has to trust you to be honest. Because the client doesn't know how long a project will take, per-page rates have become popular, but this been disastrous for me, as I accept a per-page rate, and clients (particulartly overseas) send edited pages back more than once with author changes, etc. I am expected to do this for the same per-page rate -- which can end up at 50 cents a page, or even less! With new clients, I often ask for a sample of a few pages and return the editing with my time involved and a projected cost for the total project, based on number of double-spaced pages. Or sometimes we agree on a flat fee.
